OFT launches Stop Now Orders

Using Stop Now Orders, which became law on 1 June, the OFT and other bodies can apply to the court for an injunction to stop unfair trading practices. The new regulations cover 10 different areas, including doorstep selling, package holidays, misleading and comparative advertising and timeshare.

Among the key points in the new law is a speeding up of the process of taking action against traders who breach certain already-existing consumer protection laws and an extension of injunctive powers to a much wider range of bodies.
