Staff absences 'still a problem'

Managers believe that employees 'throwing a sickie' are taking an average of three days a year off work. According to a survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, that up to three of the average 8.7 sick days taken by employees are not due to genuine ill health.

The average cost of sickness absence is £487 for each employee each year, representing an estimated cost of £12 billion to the economy as a whole. More than 90 per cent of businesses report sickness absence to be a 'very significant burden'.
