Number of start-ups falls. and it could get worse

The number of business start-ups during the first quarter of 2001 fell by 9 per cent on last year's figures. According to research published by Barclays, there were 106,000 new businesses during the first three months of the year and 102,000 closures.

The next set of figures may also show a significant reduction as the full impact of the foot and mouth outbreak is reflected. However, the rural economy usually represents only 12 to 14 per cent of new businesses across the country.
