Judgments on the up Court judgments against firms have risen for the second year in a row, according to the Registry Trust, which monitors county court cases for the Lord Chancellor's Department. The number of judgments came to more than 193,000 in the year 2000, four per cent up on 1999. In 1999, there had been a two per cent rise on the year before. Malcolm Hurlston, the trust's chairman, said: "Although the trend is definitely up, we are still a long way from the disastrous days of the early Nineties, when many small businesses were struggling for survival. We will, however, be reviewing trends in both commercial and consumer judgments over the next few months, in order to discern any underlying causes for concern." Firms that want to check whether an individual or company has a judgment against them can do so by writing to the Registry Trust at 173 Cleveland Street, London W1P 5PE. A small fee is payable, and more information is available by ringing 020 7636 5214. For the full News, see pages 4-5, 7-8, 27 of the June/July 2001 issue of First Voice |
