Small businesses to create 2m jobs - survey

Small businesses will generate up to two million new jobs in the next decade, according to a report from the Foresight programme. The report says the jobs will be created by nearly a million new small firms. By 2010 there will be over 4.5 million small to medium size enterprises, up from 3.7 million now, it says, and they will be the main drivers of economic growth, product innovation and job creation in the UK. The report, called Financing the Enterprise Society, is one of a series being produced by the Foresight programme, which brings together businesses, scientists and the Government to look ahead and think about what might happen in the future.

Among the trends it highlights is the growing impact of advances in computing, communications, and other technology, as well as the effect of e-commerce, including the benefits arising from reduced transaction and procurement costs.
