Key victory over business rates

The Small Business Council (SBC), which includes three FSB members, has achieved its first major victory after advice it gave to the Government on the Supplementary Business Rate.

The victory stems from an issue raised in last year's Green Paper Modernising Local Government Finance. At the time, the document provoked fears that small businesses would not only be paying more tax, but would also suffer a greater administrative burden.

New alternatives announced recently by the DETR give local authorities and businesses control over their region's business rates, enabling SMEs and authorities to work in partnership and to invest in contracts to provide additional services funded by an agreed additional business rate. The new Business Improvements Districts (BIDs) will be geographically targeted and easier to manage.
