FSB's manifesto for better Britain Caution over parental leave Key victory over business rates Small businesses to create 2m jobs - survey LiveWire encourages young entrepreneurs Minister visits growing franchise Creative agency doubles turnover COMMENTARY |
Caution over parental leave The FSB has expressed disappointment over the stand taken by the Trades Union Congress on parental leave. The TUC claims it has forced a Government climbdown over EU parental leave rights. The European regulations allow parents to take a total of 13 weeks' unpaid leave each to care for their children, up until the child's fifth birthday. But the regulations introduced by the UK government only allowed for parental leave to be taken for babies born or adopted on or after 15 December 1999, when the regulations were introduced. However, the Government has agreed that all parents whose children were under five on 15 December 1999 will now get the right to take parental leave. The FSB's Stephen Alambritis said: "Small businesses need certainty and finality in their affairs and retrospective legislation is difficult to cope with. The FSB supported the 1999 cut-off date and is disappointed that the TUC has raised the issue which has created uncertainty and worry for small employers in particular."
