'Metric martyr' awaits his day of judgement The case of Steven Thoburn, the so-called 'metric martyr', has been postponed for a second time. The Sunderland market trader will now have to wait until April for the hearing to resume. Steven, who pleaded not guilty, faced charges of using imperial scales in his greengrocery business after the deadline in January last year for full metric conversion. He was told by Judge John Morgan to expect a judgement in April. The case was brought by trading standards officers in order to test the law which requires traders to measure and price loose goods only in metric units.
